Things to Do in Fillmore County, MN
Fourth of July fireworks, county-fair fun, and small-town summer in Minnesota’s Bluff Country.
July might be the best month of the year to be in Fillmore County. Tucked into the rolling Driftless bluffs of Southeast Minnesota, our small towns line up parades, fireworks, tractor shows, free concerts in the park, and one of the oldest county fairs in the state — all within a short drive of the Root River and its famous paved trail. Whether you live here or you are biking through on the Root River State Trail, here is your town-by-town guide to a patriotic, picnic-friendly Fillmore County summer.
From Harmony’s giant Independence Day blowout to fastpitch softball in Whalan, antique steam engines in Spring Valley, professional theatre in Lanesboro, and the Fillmore County Fair in Preston, the calendar below runs in order by date so you can plan your whole month. Pack a lawn chair and bug spray, and bring an appetite for pie.

In trail-side Whalan (population about 63), the Fourth of July means softball. This girls’ fastpitch tournament hosted by the local Lutheran Church is a beloved bluff-country tradition going back more than 50 years — and is remembered as the first tournament ever inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame. Come for the games, the crack of the bat echoing off the hills, and one of the best church concession stands anywhere. Afterward, walk a few steps to the Aroma Pie Shoppe for a slice of its world-famous pie.
